Meet the Nominees

There are three seats up for election to the Board of Directors for three-year terms at the AGM on June 24, 2026. Four candidates have been nominated and will stand for election.


Doug Drozd

Doug has been a member of Pembina West Co-op since 1980, is a former employee at the Home Centre and was a director from 2015 to 2019.
Doug’s other board and governance experience includes 26 years on the board of EQUS REA, the largest member owned utility cooperative in Canada, and 15 years as Division 1 County Councillor in the County of Barrhead, the last 9 as Reeve. He served on province-wide special committees struck by the Rural Municipalities of Alberta on two separate occasions. He has served on the Barrhead Regional Water Commission, alternating the chair with the Mayor of Barrhead. Doug has also served on the Board of the Alberta Community and Cooperative Association. Closer to home, he is a member of the Belvedere Hall board and a public member of Barrhead Regional FCSS.
Doug has a broad range of experience and willingness to serve the community he has called home for the past 45 years.


Ivan Kusal

Ivan has had a presence in the Barrhead Community since 1970 when his parents bought a cottage at Thunder Lake. In 2017, after years of enjoying the cottage, Ivan and his wife Jane, upon retiring, moved permanently into the region subsequently rebuilding on their property at Thunder Lake.
Ivan is the current President of the Board for the Pembina West Co-op and is seeking re-election at this up coming Annual General meeting. Ivan has been a Board Member since 2020.
Ivan is a past Director of the TELUS Corporate Business Continuity office. He was a TELUS team member for more than 36 years, starting in 1980. At TELUS he was responsible to ensure that TELUS was prepared to respond to any type of man-made, technological, and/or natural disaster worldwide. He also consulted with TELUS customers and external agencies to help them understand TELUS’ capabilities and responsibilities during an emergency.
His work practice has given him experience in network management and operations, engineering, data processing, HR, and organizational development and behavior. He is a past Education Commission Chair and board member for Disaster Recovery Institute (DRI) CANADA, as well as a Past Chairperson for the Canadian Telecommunication Emergency Preparedness Association. Ivan has supported NATO as the Canadian Emergency Telecommunications representative and critical infrastructure expert.
Locally Ivan marshals at the Barrhead Golf Club, is appointed to the County’s Subdivision and Development Appeal Board, the Barrhead Regional Water Commission, as well as the Barrhead Regional Fire Services committee.
He spends his time giving to and supporting the community in which he lives, traveling, golfing, wood working, and spending time with family and friends.


Joan McLenaghan

Joan and her husband have farmed in the Meadowview area for over 39 years now. They raised 4 children and she has been active in the church, school, 4H, and the community.
They have hosted young adults from many countries and some have returned the favor.
Joan has been a director for 11 years now, serving on the member relations, finance, building and fixed assets committees, as well as the executive committee.
Joan has attended Fall Conferences, FCL AGMs, and the June District meetings.
She has really enjoyed her time serving on the board of directors and would like to continue to contribute to the growth of our Co-op.


Walter Preugschas

Walter grew up on farms in the Barrhead and Mayerthorpe areas. He attended school at Dunstable, Mayerthorpe and at the U of A in Edmonton. Together with his wife, Marjorie, they produced swine breeding stock that was marketed throughout Alberta, Western Canada, the US and Mexico. Walter helped lead the formation of two important swine enterprises: Peak Swine Genetics and BarrWest Pork Ltd. He continues to be the president of BarrWest Pork, a local company.
Together with his wife Marjorie, they raised 3 children on their hog farm in the Bloomsbury area. The entire family was involved in 4-H and many other local activities and hosted over 100 international students throughout the years.
Serving as a County of Barrhead Councillor since 2017, he has continued to be very active on various committees and boards not only locally but regionally and provincially. He has been an important advocate for this region. His focus has been on economic development. He has chaired the County of Barrhead Agriculture Service Board and chairs the County’s Economic Development Committee and the regional tourism association, Northwest of 16. He has been a board member for Pembina West Co-op since 2017 and was its Chair for 4 years.
Walter is an outdoorsman, enjoying biking, hiking, and canoeing with family and friends. He likes to read and is passionate about history.
