Barrhead Community Garden receives $88,000 from Co-op Community Spaces

Barrhead Community Garden is one of 15 projects that have received a portion of $1 million as a 2023 recipient of Co-op Community Spaces.

“The community garden relocation project is not just about gardening, they have brought in aspects of education, sustainability, events, accessibility, and simply creating an amazing place to come together as a community. It’s exciting to see a project like this come to life right here in our backyard,” said Holly Lingel, CEO of Pembina West Co-op. “Co-ops were founded by communities coming together to meet their own needs, and investing in a project like this one speaks to that continued community focus of the Co-op.”

Co-op Community Spaces is designed to help protect, beautify and improve spaces across Western Canada. Through the program, Co-op has provided $12.5 million to 175 projects since 2015 in three categories: recreation, environmental conservation and urban agriculture. FCL administers Community Spaces on behalf of more than 160 local Co-ops operating in 600 communities.

“The news that we are receiving this substantial grant has given the Barrhead Community Garden great excitement and a new life. When we originally found out that we would have to relocate, we knew the enormous amount of work that would be involved in starting over. We are grateful that the Daase and Winkler families gave us renewed hope with a new location. The support of the community has been overwhelming. Now with the Co-op Community Spaces funding we will be able to make it so much more and become a space that all ages and the whole community can enjoy.” said Marilyn Flock, a representative of the Barrhead Community Garden Society.

The Barrhead Community Garden Society invites the community to join them for a celebratory cake cutting at the Barrhead Co-op Food Store on Thursday, June 22nd at 5PM.
